Across town, a killer studied the Tatesville High School social media feed on a second-hand laptop, sitting at a scarred and dented desk.

There were plenty of photos of the night’s class reunion. Images of old classmates getting back in touch, dancing, and remembering the good times. And there was a photo of a woman who, in his opinion, should never have made it to adulthood.

He could tell by the image, one where she stood next to a dark-haired man and talking with a blonde woman, that she’d had no idea her photo was being taken.

That worked in his favor, even if she was taunting him with her very existence.

Ten years had gone by and there had not been a day during that decade that he didn’t think about her and how she’d turned him into a failure. And now… now she had the nerve to come back to town. To rub it in his face that she was alive and well and thriving.

Lacey Fuller, the one who’d gotten away, was back in Tatesville.

Had she thought it was safe to come back? That she wouldn’t be in danger if she returned to her hometown? Little did she know that he knew about her family, had kept tabs on them. Her parents were retired and traveling. And good riddance. Sheriff Fuller had pursued the investigations of the missing girls like a pit bull, sinking his teeth into every lead, into every bit of evidence, in hopes of making a connection to the killer.

In hopes of making a connection to him.

The sheriff had gotten close to connecting the dots a couple of times. A little too close. But that was part of the fun.

Standing, the man began to pace the small room he considered his office. Every few steps, he’d glance at the computer, at the image of Lacey, and felt his fury build.

She’d robbed him and now she was gloating. Flaunting the fact she’d gotten away by coming back to town and living her life like nothing had happened.

Yanking the chair back from his desk, he took his seat and stared at the photo with unblinking eyes. When they began to water, he snatched his glasses from his face to rub the irritation away before he sat back to think.

Maybe it was time to reach out again. When she’d disappeared before, she’d gone beyond his reach so he couldn’t remind her of the things that had happened. So, he couldn’t keep the events fresh in her mind.

But that had all changed. She was home now and well within reach. Maybe it was time to finish what he’d started ten years ago.

Feeling the familiar thrill of the hunt, he turned back to the computer and began to plan for the end of Lacey Fuller.
